Vocabulary skill: Preffixes

Prefijos en inglés

Los prefijos en inglés funcionan de una forma similar al castellano. Son elementos (morfemas) que se colocan delante de una palabra y modifican su significado, pero no funcionan de manera independiente. Es común verlos distinguidos con un guión de la palabra a la que anteceden. Sin embargo esta forma de escribirlos es, la mayor parte de las veces, incorrecta.
  • prefijo Dis
    denota una negación que acompaña frecuentemente a sustantivos. Significa des, in :
    -arm/disarms = armado/desarmado
    -infectant/disinfectants = infectante/desinfectante


    prefijo Under
    significa sub, des, menos, bajo. Tiene el mismo significado que el prefijo Sub :
    -production/underproduction = producción/subproducción
    -developed/underdeveloped = desarrollado/subdesarrollado
    prefijo Over
    Over significa sobre, demasiado, excesivo, más de :
    -time/overtime = tiempo,vez/horas extras, sobre tiempo
    -charge/overcharge = carga/sobrecarga


    prefijo Un
    de tipo negación por causar sentido contrario al indicado por la raíz de la palabra. Significa in, anti, poco. Se aplica a los adjetivos, sustantivos y verbos :
    -equal/unequal = igual/desigual
    -happy/unHappy = feliz/infeliz
    -faithful/unfaithful = fiel/infiel


    prefijo Il
    il es de tipo negación traduce ile- :
    -legal/illegal = legal/ilegal
    -legitimate/illegitimate = legítimo/ilegítimo


    prefijo Pre
    precede a sustantivos y significa antes, anterior a.
    -marital/premarial = matrimonial/prematrimonial
    -historic/prehistoric = histórico/prehistórico


    prefijo Multi
    multiplicidad. Significa multi.
    -ethnic/multi-ethnic = étnico/multi-étnico
    -player/multiplayer = jugador/ multijugador


    prefijo Anti
    significa contra. Por lo general aparece escrito con guión
    -wrinkle/anti-wrinkle = arruga/antiarruga
    -perspirant/antiperspirant = transpirante/antitranspirante
    prefijo Semi
    traduce semi e indica parcial.
    -circle/semicircle = círculo/semícirculo
    -final/semifinal = final/semifinal


    prefijo Im
    Inegación que significa lo contrario a, sin, in :
    -possible/impossible = posible/imposible
    -material/immaterial = material/inmaterial
